Not content with a full-on cross season behind us, Ali’s Army rose to the occasion and fourteen lads toed the line at Odd Down for the inaugural Junior 3k race as part of the BTC Race Day 5km.
Many families hot footed back from Easter breaks in order to take part, and despite a longer distance for the younger lads there were plenty of smiley faces at the end and naturally many PB’s.
Performance of the day was given to Fletcher Rogers who only just eleven years old finished not far outside 11 minutes having lost one shoe shortly after the start. He was followed in very closely by training partner Callum Skidmore.
From a coaching perspective I feel this venue and course has a lot to offer, and we await further news on the next possible competition. Perhaps some sort of relay format could be considered!
After an extremely long, busy, and successful winter season which resulted in individual and team medals within the Gwent League, the squad is now focusing on the summer fixtures which will certainly keep us up to speed.
Even the U11s will be seen racing around Eastville Park and at the Sri Chinmoy junior races, along with the Westbury Wipeout, Quadkids and the BMC Races at Millfield at the end of May.
At some point we hope to find some time for a day trip to Merthyr-Mawr for some sand dune training and a dip in the sea at Ogmore.
All we need is some decent weather.
Ali Hurford
