Midland Athletic League Division 1 – Match 3

Well, it was hot, very hot. Our extra and most popular team member of the day was the big shady tree we camped under. It was so hot they changed the planned 5000m to a 3000m and not a word of complaint was heard.

Our brilliant officials and helpers couldn’t take as much advantage of the shade as the rest of us so a huge thanks to them – Carol and Mike Strange, Nicola Diamond, Betti Farkas, Gary Barrett and Jon Jackson.

Our competing team was again small, but 20 individuals managed to cover 36 individual slots and two relays and unbelievably recorded a whole host of PB and SB’s. It was a heroic effort from everyone in searing temperatures and secured us a fighting chance of staying in Division 1 with one match to go.

Long term supporters of the team Andrea Jesudason and Sam Barrett took a clean sweep of the Triple Jump A and B competitions and filled their boots with the High Jump, Discus and also the Long Jump for Andrea where she was second in the A string with Lily Bailey winning the B. A great result for the horizontal jump team.

Kat Entwistle completely bossed the women’s 3000m showing to take the victory after she had run an 800m earlier on the day. Sarah Everitt ran a similarly super savvy race as ever to take the 1500m B string victory while saving what she could for the 3000m to come. On the men’s side we had the first father and son combo I am aware of running the A and B string 800m with Ollie Robertson-Kurd and Tariq.

Anna Loughlin made a welcome return to the team and celebrated by collecting additional performance points in the Hammer as well as a Shot Putt PB.

The women’s 4x100m was a fantastic race with the first three separated by only 0.22s and our team of Sarah Long, Maira Mumma, Lily Bailey and Tamara Jackson led them all home. Great running and baton changing all the way round and brilliant composure from Tamara on the anchor leg.

It is incredible anyone did a SB never mind a PB with all the multi-eventing and heat of Sunday but there is no stopping you:

Women’s PB’s – Amena Kofi (400m), Katrina Entwistle (800m), Anna Loughlin (SP), Sam Barrett (DT), Andrea Jesudason (DT)

Women’s SB’s – Sarah Everitt (1500m & 3000m), Emma Clarke (100mH & HT), Andrea Jesudason (HJ & TJ), Anna Loughlin (HT), 4x100m Relay Team: Sarah Long, Maira Mumma, Lily Bailey & Tamara Jackson

Men’s PB’s – Lee Gawler (400m), Ollie Robertson-Kurd (800m), Tariq Kurd (800m), Sam Johnson (1500m, SP & JT), Matthew Hula (LJ & JT), Tristan Jamieson (DT)

Men’s SB's – George Hunter (LJ & TJ)

Our last match is at Notts on the 13th August of August and we are in 4th place, equal with Birchfield with one of us being relegated along with Tamworth. To stay up all we need to do is finish ahead of Birchfield. When we had 43 athletes in our team we finished two places ahead of them and with the 21/20 athletes of the last two matches, we were just behind them so we can do this if we can turn out.
